Guilt and confusion sat heavily on Danny’s shoulders. He couldn’t shrug the feelings off, for Anna’s absence had bought him a reprieve. And what kind of man did that make him? But it had been hard to look her in the eye since that kiss – and not just one kiss, either. That was the most confusing. There had been several. And now Anna had the idea that he was in love with her. He’d seen it in her face.

It didn’t matter that he hadn’t meant to lead her on, for Anna was young, naive, had no experience with men, and he was six years older. He should have known better.

Guilt prodded him, a reminder that the girl was off doing something dangerous, something he should have taken on. But she’d insisted on delivering the new radio transmitter, said it was safer that way, until his Dutch was up to scratch.

There’d been some incidents lately. She and Edwin had glossed over them, but it was why Danny’s parachute jump had been cancelled and they’d ended up landing. Some agents had been parachuted in and been riddled with bullets before they’d even touched the ground, the Germans waiting for them. Even so, he’d wanted to deliver the radio, but Anna insisted it was her job. And he already knew that once she’d set her mind on something, there was no holding her back. In that respect, Anna Pietersen was exactly like her father.

Meanwhile, Danny was a conflicted man. On the one hand, he wanted no harm to come to Anna. If the Bosch discovered her with the illicit radio, she would be transported to a concentration camp, or perhaps even executed. He wanted her safe return, but then he would have to deal with a strong young woman with love in her eyes, and maybe even marriage on her mind.

The others threw winks at him. Like they knew of his dilemma. Edwin definitely did, for the big man went into great detail about what happens when a fish is first caught on a hook. How he may twist and turn and wriggle and fight for his freedom, but eventually the fish becomes exhausted with the battle and gives in – gratefully.

Edwin grinned every time he saw Danny. And now he thumped him on the back, like a conspirator who shared a secret.

‘Not easy being a courier,’ said Edwin. ‘Need to be fearless. She’s a brave woman. And strong. Comes from good Dutch stock.’

‘Who, Beatrix? She’d eat you alive, man.’ De Groot looked up, his hands black from trying to fix the ailing duplicating machine.

‘Both fine women. But you’d need to sleep with one eye open with that Beatrix,’ chuckled Edwin. ‘No – it’s Anna who’s fond of our young friend here,’ he continued. ‘Though what she sees in that ugly face, God Himself could only tell us.’

Danny let them have their fun. For despite his problem with Anna, Danny Welland was happy to be back there among good friends, brushing up his Dutch, throwing himself into the planning of this new escape line.
